'Lewd' comment about Captain Anshuman Singh's wife Smriti sparks outrage; NCW writes to Delhi Police

A man's disrespectful comment about the widow of Kirti Chakra (India's second-highest gallantry award) awardee Captain Anshuman Singh has sparked outrage on social media, with users demanding action against him. The National Commission for Women (NCW) took note of the comment on Wednesday and wrote to the Delhi Police, asking for immediate action against him. The NCW stated that the comment violates Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. "NCW condemns this behavior and urges immediate police action," the women's panel said on X. Late Anshuman's wife Smriti Singh and his mother received the honor from President Droupadi Murmu on July 6 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) took note of the comment on Wednesday and wrote to the Delhi Police, asking for immediate action against him. The offensive remark was posted under a photo of Smriti Singh at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where she received the award on behalf of her late husband, who died heroically trying to save his colleagues at an Indian Army camp in the Siachen glacier.

Captain Singh was stationed with 26 Punjab regiment as a medical officer in the Siachen Glacier region. On July 19, 2023, a short circuit triggered a fire in an Indian Army ammunition dump around 3 am. Captain Singh, witnessing a fibreglass hut engulfed in flames, acted swiftly to rescue those trapped inside. He managed to save four to five individuals before the fire spread to a nearby medical investigation room. Unfortunately, he became trapped and succumbed to the inferno.

The NCW stated that the comment violates Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

"NCW condemns this behavior and urges immediate police action," the women's panel said on X.

Late Anshuman's wife Smriti Singh and his mother received the honor from President Droupadi Murmu on July 6 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
