Mumbai : In the last week, The Lifeness Science Institute (LSI) hosted a seminar to discuss the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)’s new Dietary Guidelines for 2024. Marking the first revision in 13 years, the new guidelines aim at fulfilling nutrient requirements and combating non-communicable diseases.

Held in Mumbai at the Marathi Bhasha Bhavan, the seminar brought together experts from the industry, including academics, dietitians, nutritionists, and other industry leaders to discuss the intricacies of these new changes and dietary restrictions.

The 17 guidelines in question are issued for various age groups. They emphasize the importance of physical activity, nutrient intake, a diverse diet, and good food choices. Each chapter is an in-depth exploration of insights and practical examples. The guidelines also address the use of supplements and oils in regular diets, which promote overall health and well-being.

The event started with a conversation between Dr. B. Sesikeran (Former Director, NIN), and Dr. Sudershan Rao (Chairman, Scientific Panel on Food Additives at FSSAI), as they shared their scientific perspectives on EAR, RDA, and food additives. They also rationalized and explained the guidelines laid out by ICMR.

Then, Dr. Subhaprada (Vice President of AFSTI) discussed the industry’s perspective towards the guidelines, with a special emphasis on processed foods. To go more in-depth, renowned Wellness & Sports Nutrition Specialist Ms. Gauri Murthy, deliberated on the addition of protein and protein supplement consumption in the guidelines, which is supported by scientific evidence.

Lastly, the event concluded with a panel discussion with the experts, who addressed pressing participant queries about the applicability of dietary guidelines across India.

Dr. Subhadra Mandalika, MSc., PhD, Professor (Rtd.), Academic and Research Advisor, Lifeness Science Institute (LSI), said of the event, “The seminar was a resounding success, emphasizing the importance of a role of dietary guidelines in promoting health. We hope to hold more events similar to this one, to educate people about the need for proper and correct nutrition, health, and overall well-being. Students and young professionals especially should be aware of this need, as with a hectic lifestyle including academia and work, they sometimes forego nutrition for convenience. In today’s fast-paced world people need to learn how to take care of themselves, especially with young adults moving away from home to pursue their careers and education.”

Following this event, LSI is also hosting the upcoming international conference ‘VishwaSwasthyam – 2025’. The brochure for the same was unveiled by Dr. B. Sesikeran (Former Director, NIN), and Mr. Gopal Sharma (Director, LSI), conference chair. The conference is set to take place on the 10th and 11th of January, 2025 in Mumbai on the theme “Metabolic Health: Protect the Present and Safeguard the Future”.
