Manchester United have confirmed that central defender Raphael Varane will be sidelined for the coming weeks because of a muscle injury.

The France international has struggled with injuries this season, as well as facing a brief period on the bench while manager Erik ten Hag favoured alternative options at the heart of his defence. Varane is believed to have sustained his latest injury during the dramatic 4-3 defeat away at Chelsea last week.

United's statement makes clear when the club hope to see the 30-year-old return. It reads: "Manchester United defender Raphael Varane will be out for the next few weeks with a muscle injury sustained during our game against Chelsea last week.

"The French World Cup winner is aiming to be back in action before the end of the season in May."

To make matters worse, the statement goes on to reveal that fellow centre-back Jonny Evans will also be out of action with a muscle issue, but is expected to return sooner than Varane. It leaves Ten Hag, once again, short of options at central defence.

The news regarding Varane comes at a time when speculaton remains rife that this season will be the defender's last at Old Trafford. Currently, the 2018 World Cup winner is one of United's highest earners, on a rumoured £340,000 per-week.

His contract expires at the end of this campaign and United are not interested in extending his stay while on his current wage. Varane is unlikely to take a pay-cut and in turn, is likely to seek a new challenge elsewhere in the summer.

Varane has discussed his own future in the past, admitting he could see himself calling time on his playing career at his previous two clubs, as well as United.

"I will finish my career either in Madrid, or in Manchester, or in Lens," Varane explained in March of last year. "I will not move to another club [other than those]. But Madrid seems complicated to me. Players don’t usually go back there. The most likely outcome today is that I will finish [my career] in either Manchester or Lens."

Varane arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2021 from Real Madrid but hasn't exactly lived up to the excitement that greeted his arrival three years ago.
