'Manjummel Boys' producer responds to Ilaiyaraaja's notice over 'Gunaa' song

'Manjummel Boys' producer Shawn Antony broke his silence regarding the copyright violation notice sent by Ilaiyaraaja. Speaking to The News Minute, he said that they had secured permission to use Ilaiyaraaja's 'Kanmani Anbodu' song from 'Gunaa' from two audio labels. On May 22, Ilaiyaraaja sent a legal notice to the producers of 'Manjummel Boys' over the use of 'Kanmani Anbodu' song from Kamal Haasan-starrer 'Gunaa'. In the legal notice, Ilaiyaraaja mentioned that he is the sole owner of his creation and therefore, rights have to be acquired from him. The legal notice also said that the credit expressed in the title card isn't enough.

Earlier, '96' director Prem Kumar mentioned that the team had sought permission to use the song.

The producer said, "One of the companies holds the rights for the Telugu version, and the other for the remaining languages. We got rights from Pyramid and Sreedevi Sounds, the music companies which own the song."

Further, Shawn Antony said that he and his co-producers, Soubin Shahir and Babu Shahir, are yet to receive a legal notice from Ilaiyaraaja.

In the legal notice, Ilaiyaraaja mentioned that he is the sole owner of his creation and therefore, rights have to be acquired from him. The composer also asked the makers to secure the necessary permission or licence from him. The legal notice also said that the credit expressed in the title card isn't enough.

'Manjummel Boys', directed by Chidambaram, is a survival drama that talks about friendship. It is about a gang of friends who travel to Kodaikanal. One of the men from the gang falls into a deep fissure at the Guna Caves in Kodaikanal. The film is about how the friends come together to save him.

Guna Caves got the name from Kamal Haasan-starrer 'Gunaa', which was shot in the caves in 1990. The song, 'Kanmani Anbodu', composed by Ilaiyaraaja, is sung by Kamal Haasan and S Janaki.

'Manjummel Boys' earned over Rs 200 crore worldwid apart from receiving rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.
