After Neuer’s somewhat shaky form this season and his mistake in the Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid, the addition of another mishap to the list only serves to fuel the discussion regarding who should be first choice between the sticks for the German National team this summer. RTL Deutschland (via @iMiaSanMia) captured the Germany head coach saying, “I won’t let any discussion arise, even if everyone tries to start one”, in response to potentially reconsidering Neuer’s standing in the squad after the match against Greece.
Neuer is still a world-class goalkeeper and undoubtedly the best man for the job. It’s not as though ter Stegen doesn’t make mistakes, and it’s not like Neuer is no longer making excellent saves.
The Bayern Munich captain happened to make an incredible double save to deny Christos Tzolis in the same match and that isn’t being talked about nearly enough. Neuer is still at the top of his game.
