Meena Kumari’s stepson reacts to Heeramandi’s Sharmin Segal saying legendary actor’s ‘nothingness’ in Pakeezah inspired her: ‘Zameen aasman ka fark hai’

Days after Sharmin Segal compared her performance in Heeramandi to Meena Kumari’s in Pakeezah, the legendary actor’s stepson, Tajdar Amrohi, has reacted to her statement. In a recent interaction, Tajdar, son of Pakeezah director Kamal Amrohi, shared how he doesn’t relate to Sharmin’s comparison and stated that Heeramandi can’t be compared to Pakeezah. In the conversation with Zoom, Tajdar was asked about Sharmin’s statement that she took inspiration from Meena Kumari’s ‘nothingness’ in Pakeezah to portray her character of Alamzeb in Heeramandi. Speaking about this, Tajdar said, “Zameen aasman ka fark hai between ‘Heeramandi’ and ‘Pakeezah’ (There is a difference of earth and sky between them). In one of her interviews, she said, “I tried to bring Meena Kumari’s nothingness from Pakeezah into my character in Heeramandi”.

He responded, “I don’t know Sharmin. But no, I can’t relate to her statement on nothingness.”

Since Pakeezah is based on the life of a Lucknow-based tawaif and Heeramandi on the lives of tawaifs in the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore, fans have been drawing comparisons between the two projects. Speaking about this, Tajdar said, “Zameen aasman ka fark hai between ‘Heeramandi’ and ‘Pakeezah’ (There is a difference of earth and sky between them). Don’t compare the two. Nobody can make ‘Pakeezah’ again. Neither Meena Kumari nor Kamal Amrohi can ever be born again.”

Talking about how she prepared for her role in the Netflix series, Sharmin Segal earlier told ETimes that she trained in dance and diction. She mentioned that she tried watching Pakeezah 15-16 times but took a while to get through it because it was unlike anything she’d seen before. “Meena Kumari was one of my inspirations,” she said, highlighting the “nothingness” of her performance.

Sharmin has been massively trolled for her “expressionless” acting in the period drama series and has spoken about the immense criticism and trolling she has received for her performance in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali web series. In one of her interviews, she said, “I tried to bring Meena Kumari’s nothingness from Pakeezah into my character in Heeramandi”.

Tajdar also spoke about how Bhansali held his father in high regard. Asked if he found any similarities between Heeramandi and Pakeezah, he said, “Main iske baare mein bolna nahin chahta kyunki Bhansali is a big fan of my father Kamal Amrohi. In every film of his, Bhansali tries to take the shots in a very similar way as my father did.”
