Patna: Soaring temperatures are taking a toll not just on individuals' physical well-being but also their mental health . According to health professionals, the scorching heat is causing sleep deprivation , difficulty focusing, heightened anxiety levels, and even the onset of manic episodes.“The number of patients with mental problems has increased this summer. More than 9,000 patients have visited my clinic till May this year. Among them, 25% were those who had mood disorder issues due to the extreme weather ,” said Dr Jayesh Ranjan, director of Bihar Institute of Mental Health and Allied Sciences, Koilwar.Professor and head of psychiatry department at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, Dr Santosh Kumar, said they were witnessing an increase in patients with anger issues, along with lack of concentration and sleep. “Manic episodes are triggered in those suffering from bipolar disruptive disorder in such weather,” said Dr Kumar, adding patients and their attendants sometimes avoid routine check-up in extreme weather, leading to deterioration of mental health. Dr Kumar advised people to take proper sleep, consume right diet, especially fruits, as well as keep themselves hydrated to stay fit physically as well as mentally in the hot weather.City-based clinical psychologist, Dr Binda Singh, said, “The excessive heat causes hormonal imbalances and irritability in people. For instance, during hot afternoons, it is common to witness people yelling at each other on the road due to traffic problems. This loss of control is not limited to adults, as even children experience mental health issues in such weather conditions.”"Kids are not able to concentrate on their studies, they become frustrated. In fact, we are getting cases of students who have not done well in their examination, then there is pressure of parents on them and on top of that is the extreme weather, all impacting their mental health,” said Dr Singh.Dr Binda advised people to ensure they go for early morning exercise, drink a lot of water and have fresh home cooked meals. “Food not only has an impact on physical health, but also on mental health,” she added.
