Mosquitoes: BBMP to Use Covid Mist Cannons to Fight Mosquitoes

As fogging activity has to be carried out in all localities, a decision was taken to put these cannons to use.

BBMP chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath praised her. Her mother Shobha works in a hospital. Lakshman N Naik and Yeshawanth TJ also excelled in their exams.

Bengaluru: Mist cannon machines, procured three years ago to spray disinfectants in crowded places to stop the spread of Covid, will be put into action once again. This time, they will be deployed to check the outbreak of dengue in the city. There were 600 cases of dengue reported in Bengaluru in the last two weeks.These mist cannons , which have been lying idle for some time, have been repurposed to function as fogging machines to contain the mosquito population.Eight mist cannons, each worth Rs 30 lakh, will be handed over to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s ( BBMP ) health department by the civic agency’s engineering cell on Thursday, which marks National Dengue Day. They were purchased at the peak of Covid using 15th Finance Commission grants.The cannons will be deployed in eight BBMP zones. “With dengue cases increasing across the city in recent weeks, we’ve been working on different strategies. As fogging activity has to be carried out in all localities, a decision was taken to put these cannons to use. Insecticides will be mixed with water and diluted to ensure there are no effects on humans, yet they will kill the target,” officials said.Suralkar Vikas Kishore, BBMP special commissioner (health), said: “BBMP has also initiated mosquito-control spraying. Three designated personnel will spray in each ward, targeting insecticide application at larval breeding sites. This will be a daily activity. Tires, garbage sites, black spots, among other areas are the primary hubs for larvae breeding.”
