KEY HIGHLIGHTS MS Dhoni created a new world record on Friday (April 19).

Dhoni became the first wicketkeeper-batter to score 5000 runs in the IPL.

Dhoni also went past Ab de Villiers tally of 5162 runs to become the sixth-leading run scorer in the IPL.

MS Dhoni created history on Friday (April 19) during the IPL 2024 match played between the Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The 42-year-old became the first cricketer in the world to score 5,000 runs in the IPL as a wicketkeeper-batsman. The former Indian captain achieved the milestone during his 28-run knock against LSG in CSK ’s seventh league stage match of the ongoing IPL 2024 season. During his stay at the crease, the legendary cricketer faced nine balls and hammered three fours and two sixes.

It was due to his knock that CSK managed to post a total of 176 runs on the board for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs, but it didn’t prove to be enough in the end, and the hosts chased it down for the loss of just two wickets in 19 overs. The eight-wicket loss against LSG was CSK’s third defeat in seven matches played so far in IPL 2024, and with eight points, they are in third place in the points table.

Irrespective of the match result, the evening in Lucknow was all about MS Dhoni, and the superstar cricketer didn’t disappoint his fans either. In what is most likely to be his first and last outing at Ekana Stadium, Dhoni entertained the fans with his big shots. He hammered one innovative six by walking across the stumps on the second ball of the 19th over and then smoked another 101-metre six on the third ball of the last over of the innings, which was bowled by Yash Thakur.

During his 28-run knock, Dhoni also went past Ab de Villiers tally of 5162 runs in the IPL to become the sixth leading run scorer in the history of the tournament. He has 5169 runs to his name in 250 innings of the 257 matches played so far. Apart from CSK, Dhoni also played in 30 matches for the Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2016 and 2017 seasons of the IPL.

Dhoni also created a new record on Friday during match No. 34 of the IPL 2024 by becoming the first cricketer to score more than 500 runs in the IPL after turning 40. The previous record for scoring most runs after the age of 40 in the IPL was held by Chris Gayle, who scored 481 runs.
