New Delhi: Mumps cases are being reported at an increasing rate by the health authorities in Delhi and the National Capital Regions (NCR). Mumps is a viral infection that affects majorly the children and some adults.

Mumps is caused by the virus called paramyxovirus that spreads through respiratory droplets or close contact with an infected person’s saliva.

Dr Nasiruddin G. – Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, Bangalore told News9, “The MMR vaccine in India is a two-dose powerhouse protecting children against measles, mumps, and rubella. The first shot is given between 9 and 12 months, followed by a second dose at 15 to 18 months. This regimen offers over 95 per cent lifelong immunity. For children who miss a dose or get their first dose early (before 12 months), a third dose is recommended between 4 and 6 years old. Catch-up programs ensure older children and adolescents are also protected, requiring at least two MMR doses.”

“MMR is a safe and effective way to prevent these serious diseases. While mild fever, rash, or swollen glands are possible temporary side effects, the potential complications of measles, mumps, and rubella, like pneumonia, deafness, or birth defects, are far more concerning.”
