These glands are called parotid glands that make saliva, these swollen glands may be tender or even painful, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Dr Deepak Parashar, MBBS, MPH and Epidemiologist from Healthians told News9, “Mumps is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads easily within close communities and causes swelling and discomfort in the salivary glands. To prevent the transmission, it’s essential to maintain good hygiene and avoid close contact with people who have symptoms like swelling in the neck area, fever, difficulty chewing, etc. As it can be challenging to consider a stranger’s symptom, the best defense against mumps is vaccination, which is a must for children aged 12 months and older in two doses of the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccine, spaced at least 28 days apart.”
