Delhi Water Minister Atishi, who has been on an indefinite fast since June 21 to protest against the alleged reduced supply of water by the Haryana Government, was rushed to the emergency ward of Lok Nayak Hospital early on Tuesday after her blood sugar level dropped to 36 mg/dL.

In a press conference, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh said, “Since Atishi is admitted in the ICU, we must discontinue the ‘anischitkalin anshan’ (indefinite fast) for water. We will continue the agitation in other ways.” He added that the party will write a letter to the Prime Minister to consider the water crisis issue in Delhi.

On Atishi’s health, Singh informed, “Atishi is still admitted in the Lok Nayak (hospital) ICU after her state became unstable in the night. Her medical examination is going on. Presently, there are doctors in the hospital ICU looking after her.”

Earlier, in a post on X, the party said that Atishi’s blood sugar level dropped to 43 mg/dL at midnight and dropped further to 36 mg/dL, adding doctors advised immediate hospitalisation.

Saurabh Bhardwaj posted on X on Tuesday, “Atishi’s blood sugar level fell to 36 mg/dL, so she has been admitted to the LNJP hospital.” He said the AAP heeded the doctor’s advice immediately after finding the blood sugar level to be 36 mg/dL via a portable glucometer.

“Her blood sugar levels had been dropping from the night. When we submitted her blood sample, her sugar levels came out to be 46 mg/dL. When we checked her sugar levels from a portable machine, her sugar levels came out to be 36 mg/dL… Doctors are checking her vitals and only after that will they give suggestions…” he told news agency ANI.

Senior AAP leaders, including Sanjay Singh, were present when Atishi was rushed to the hospital. Singh told ANI, “The doctors suggested she should be admitted to the hospital before her condition worsens… She is being admitted to LNJP Hospital. She has not eaten anything for the last 5 days. Her sugar levels have dropped, ketone is increasing, and BP is decreasing… She is not fighting for herself, she is fighting for the people of Delhi, for water…”

Suresh Kumar, Medical Director, LNJP Hospital, told ANI Atishi is stable. Kumar said, “When Atishi was brought to the hospital, her blood sugar was low. She was drowsy and her sodium level was also low. She is currently on IV fluids, and her vital parameters are stable right now. Some blood tests have been done. The reports are awaited”.

On the fourth day of the ‘paani satyagraha’, Atishi’s blood sugar level dropped to 71 mg/dL, a steep decline from 99 mg/dL on the first day on June 21. The medical examination team earlier expressed concern over the ketone level being indicated as positive.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the “expected values for normal fasting blood glucose concentration are between 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) and 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L)”.

In a video message on X on Monday, Atishi said doctors examined her on Sunday and said her blood pressure, sugar level, and weight are decreasing, and the ketone level has increased significantly.

“The doctors have advised that such a rise in ketone levels is dangerous and can have a long-term negative effect on the body. It can harm health. No matter how bad my health is, no matter how much pain my body is in, my resolve to fast is firm and until 28 lakh Delhiites do not get water, my indefinite fast will continue,” she added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called Atishi’s protest a “drama”, and said it was shameful that the AAP government was “engrossed” in an “air-conditioned Satyagraha” amid deaths due to the heatwave in Delhi. Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav said Atishi’s fast was “political showmanship”
