In what is certainly an extremely well-timed feat of photography, NASA shared a captivating image of a green-hued aurora. Now, auroras happen frequently on Earth as a result of geomagnetic storms that are themselves sparked by the volatile activity on the Sun when it literally blasts huge amounts of energy out into space and anything that comes in the way, feels the fury of the Sun. The same applies to the Earth and other planets like Mars, Venus and more. Fortunately, Earth’s magnetic field protects humanity from all such vagaries of nature.
Having said that, for most people, actually getting to see an aurora with their naked eyes is difficult as they are generally found in the extreme northern hemisphere. That is why they are know as Northern Lights. Of course, in the southern hemisphere, they are known as Southern Lights. However, just imagine how difficult, if not impossible, it would be to get to watch it from the sky above!
Delightful! And that is exactly the opportunity that NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick got from the window of the Dragon spacecraft up in the sky and he did not waste it. Not just that, miraculously, the spacecraft alignment in the photo, with the arc of the aurora simply nailed perfection.
In a X post, NASA shared the captivating image and what he said, “We have been looking at aurora out the cupola windows a lot lately. Starliner was doing some testing today so we decided to check it out from the Dragon windows. Timing was great for the aurora to line up nicely with Starliner’s service module thrusters.”
Notably the Boeing Starliner is a partially reusable spacecraft that can ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS). As the name suggests, it is manufactured by the Boeing company for the US space agency NASA .
