NASA telescope captures fireworks around forming star

(CNN) - A spectacular new image from a NASA telescope shows what appears to be fireworks in the galaxy. This fiery hourglass figure shows an object in the early stages of becoming a star. You can see it growing in the neck of the hourglass where its parent molecular cloud still surrounds it. The object creates outflows as it consumes the cloud which is made up of gas and dust. The protostar will push away much of this molecular cloud as it ages and many of the structures we see here will begin to fade.

(CNN) - A spectacular new image from a NASA telescope shows what appears to be fireworks in the galaxy.

This fiery hourglass figure shows an object in the early stages of becoming a star.

The budding protostar is about 100,000 years old. That is very young for a heavenly body.

You can see it growing in the neck of the hourglass where its parent molecular cloud still surrounds it.

The object creates outflows as it consumes the cloud which is made up of gas and dust. That process creates this effect reminiscent of fireworks brightening a cloudy night sky.

The protostar will push away much of this molecular cloud as it ages and many of the structures we see here will begin to fade.

Eventually, this impressive display will end and the star itself will become more visible by telescope.
