National Plastic Surgery Day 2024: Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body to improve contours and proportions. Commonly targeted areas include the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck, and chin. The procedure involves inserting a thin tube (cannula) through small incisions to suction out fat. While liposuction can enhance body shape, it is not a substitute for weight loss or a treatment for obesity.

Liposuction has been surrounded by myths and misconceptions. While many people see it as a miracle solution for weight loss, the reality is more nuanced, says Dr Anmol Chugh consultant, plastic surgeon at CK Birla hospital, Gurugram. Dr Chugh lists down some of the common myths and facts about liposuction.

Myth: Liposuction is a weight loss solution

Fact: Liposuction is not intended for significant weight loss. It is a body contouring procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates are those who are near their target weight but want to address specific areas of fat.

Myth: Liposuction results are permanent

Fact: While liposuction does remove fat cells permanently, it does not prevent future weight gain. The remaining fat cells in the body can still expand if a person gains weight post-surgery. Maintaining a stable weight through a healthy lifestyle is crucial to preserving the results of liposuction.

Myth: Liposuction is an easy way out

Fact: Liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. It requires a recovery period and carries risks like any surgical procedure. Patients must continue to eat healthily and exercise regularly to maintain their results. Liposuction should be viewed as a complement to, not a replacement for, a healthy lifestyle.

Myth: Liposuction can remove cellulite

Fact: Liposuction is not effective in removing cellulite. Cellulite is caused by fibrous connective tissue pulling down on the skin, creating a dimpled appearance. Liposuction targets fat cells, not the fibrous bands that cause cellulite. Other treatments are specifically designed to address cellulite.

Myth: Liposuction is only for women

Fact: Liposuction is not gender specific. Both men and women can benefit from the procedure. Men often seek liposuction to address areas such as the abdomen, flanks, and chest, while women commonly target the thighs, hips, and stomach. The decision to undergo liposuction should be based on individual needs and goals, regardless of gender.

Myth: Liposuction is painful

Fact: Modern liposuction techniques have significantly improved in terms of pain management and recovery. Patients typically receive local or general anesthesia during the procedure, and post-operative pain is manageable with prescribed medications. Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days to weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery.
