Police said that the deceased Om Sunil Bhalerao (19) was a resident of Kalamb in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district.

The driver of the Fortuner SUV, Mayur Sahebrao Mohite (39), is a resident of Mohitewadi in Shel Pimpalgaon village of Khed taluka of Pune district.
Mayur is the nephew of Dilip Mohite, a leader of the Ajit Pawar led NCP and is the sitting MLA in the Maharashtra assembly from the Khed Alandi assembly seat, police said.
A 19-year-old youth died in an alleged hit and run incident after the bike he was riding was hit by an SUV moving on the wrong side on the Pune Nashik Highway on Saturday night. A First Information Report (FIR) was filed by Om’s uncle Nitin Bhalerao (41). “Probe suggests that the accused was driving his Fortuner SUV on the wrong side of the highway at a high speed in the direction of Kalamb to Manchar. The SUV hit the bike knocking down Om Bhalerao. He sustained multiple serious injuries and later succumbed. The driver fled the scene without helping or ensuring medical assistance to the victim. He was placed under arrest later.” said Inspector Arul Fuge, Manchar police station incharge. Advertisement Superintendent of Police for Pune Rural, Pankaj Deshmukh said, “The blood samples of the arrested driver have been collected and sent for examination. The results are awaited. Meanwhile, he (Mayur) was produced before court and has been remanded to magisterial custody.” When asked about some reports that one more person was injured in the accident, Fuge said, “That is not the case.” When contacted, Dilip Mohite said, “This is a very unfortunate incident and I offer my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased youth. Mayur is my nephew. He is the son of my late elder brother. Mayur was on his way home Saturday night when the unfortunate incident took place. Police have launched an investigation in the case. I will soon be meeting the family of the deceased.” When asked about the driver fleeing the scene without helping the victim, Dilip Mohite said, “That is absolutely not the case. Mayur called the ambulance. He spoke with me at the time. But because a mob started gathering, he went to the police station. He has been in police custody since. I want to make it clear that he was not under the influence. He has never consumed alcohol in his life. He is a responsible citizen. He is an engineer and runs his own business.”
