New results of Chang’e 5: Chinese researchers discovered natural graphene in lunar soil samples for the first time – Passionategeekz

Passionategeekz learned thatAbout 1.9% of all interstellar carbon exists in the form of grapheneits morphology and properties are determined by the specific formation process, so the composition and structural characteristics of natural graphene will provide important reference and information for the geological evolution of celestial bodies and the in-situ resource utilization of the moon.

The research team used electron microscopy-Raman integration technology to collect Raman spectra at locations where the carbon content of lunar soil samples was relatively high.It was confirmed that the crystalline quality of graphite carbon in lunar soil samples is relatively highRegions of the lunar soil where carbon is present contain iron compounds, which are closely related to the formation of graphene.

Through the comprehensive use of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-angle annular dark field imaging and high-resolution imaging of spherical aberration electron microscopy under cryogenic conditions, energy spectrum and electron energy loss spectrum, flight secondary mass spectrometry and other characterization techniques and rigorous comparison and analysis of test results from multiple aspects, the researchers explored and confirmed that the graphite carbon detected in the lunar soil samples is few-layer graphene (2-7 layers). It is also proposed that the formation of few-layer graphene and graphitic carbon may originate from the mineral catalytic process induced by solar wind and early lunar volcanic eruptions.。

The research results, titled “Discovery of Natural Few-Layer Graphene on the Moon,” were published in the National Science Review journal on June 17. Professor Zhang Wei from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Jilin University is the first author of this article. Professor Zou Meng and Li Xiujuan, senior engineer from the Key Laboratory of Engineering Bionics of the Ministry of Education, and researcher Ren Wencai from the Shenyang National Laboratory of Materials Science, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, are co-authors of this article.
