Amid the reports of Gambhir taking up the job, BCCI secretaryhas confirmed India's coach for the Zimbabwe series.
Vvs Laxman Speaking to the media in Barbados, Jay announced thatwill coach Team India on the Zimbabwe tour.
He wanted to become India's head coach in 2021 but was given the NCA's role.
He won't be able to continue as KKR's mentor if he joins Team India as the head coach.

Rahul Dravid's successful stint as the head coach of Team India ended after the 2024 T20 World Cup. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa in the final to win the elusive trophy for the second time. Under Rahul Dravid, India reached the final of the 2023 World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup. But the Rohit Sharma-led side lost both finals.
India ended their ICC trophy drought in the T20 WC and defeated SA by 7 runs in a nail-biting thriller. Dravid had already confirmed that he hadn't reapplied for the top job and would leave the position after the end of his stint.

Vvs Laxman Speaking to the media in Barbados, Jay announced thatwill coach Team India on the Zimbabwe tour. He is the present chairman of the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Laxman, who joined NCA in 2021, has coached India in few series in Dravid's absence and will once again do the job on a stand-in basis.
"Both coach and selector appointments will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but new coach will join from Sri Lanka series," Jay Shah said.
Laxman, who looked favourite to replace Dravid as the next head coach, has reportedly said no to the top job. His stint as the NCA chairman will end later in 2024. He wanted to become India's head coach in 2021 but was given the NCA's role. Dravid was NCA's chairman from 2019 to 2021.
When will Gautam Gambhir join Team India?
If appointed, Gautam Gambhir will join Team India's coaching staff starting the Sri Lanka series. The Men in Blue are scheduled to play 3 ODIs and as many T20Is against the island nation. Gambhir came into contention for the top job after his success with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2024.
He made his return to KKR as their mentor and coached the Shreyas Iyer-led side to a title win. Gambhir is hugely credited for the team's success. He won't be able to continue as KKR's mentor if he joins Team India as the head coach.
