The Congress has criticised Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for allegedly objecting to party MP Shashi Tharoor raising the 'Jai Samvidhan' (hail Constitution) slogan while taking the oath in the Lower House.
"Jai Hind, Jai Samvidhan," he said, concluding his oath and shaking hands with the Speaker.
Congress MPs sitting in the gallery objected to Birla's remark, saying, "What's wrong in saying 'Jai Samvidhan'?
Congress's Social Media chief Supriya Shrinate said, "Now the Speaker has a problem even with saying 'Jai Samvidhan' in Parliament.
Notably, many MPs, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, took their oaths on June 25 and raised the 'Jai Samvidhan' slogan.
The Congress has criticised Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for allegedly objecting to party MP Shashi Tharoor raising the 'Jai Samvidhan' (hail Constitution) slogan while taking the oath in the Lower House.
On Thursday, Shashi Tharoor took his oath in English while holding a copy of the Constitution. "Jai Hind, Jai Samvidhan," he said, concluding his oath and shaking hands with the Speaker.

As Tharoor was walking towards the gallery, Om Birla said, "You are taking the oath of the Constitution only."
Congress MPs sitting in the gallery objected to Birla's remark, saying, "What's wrong in saying 'Jai Samvidhan'? You shouldn't have any objections to this," said Congress MP Deepender Hooda.
"I don't need your suggestions on what needs to be objected to and what not. Now sit down," Birla replied.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra raised objections over the Speaker's conduct. "Can't 'Jai Samvidhan' be chanted in the Indian Parliament? People in power were not stopped from raising unparliamentary and unconstitutional slogans in Parliament, but objections were raised when an Opposition MP chanted 'Jai Samvidhan'. The anti-Constitution sentiment that emerged during the elections has now taken a new form, which seeks to weaken our Constitution," she said in a tweet.
"The Constitution by which Parliament functions, the Constitution by which every member takes the oath, the Constitution by which every citizen gets protection of life and livelihood -- will that same Constitution now be opposed to suppress the voice of the Opposition?" she added.
Congress's Social Media chief Supriya Shrinate said, "Now the Speaker has a problem even with saying 'Jai Samvidhan' in Parliament. It's amazing -- they are objecting to the victory of the very Constitution by which they have to run the House. And when interrupted, he started abusing a five-time MP, Deepender Hooda. Sir, you have won by 41,974 votes, and he has won by 3,45,298 votes."
Notably, many MPs, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, took their oaths on June 25 and raised the 'Jai Samvidhan' slogan.
Earlier, the Speaker objected to members raising slogans during the swearing-in and expunged their remarks, which were not part of the oath.
