BATHINDA: After Bhagwant Singh ‘Pradhan Mantri’ Bajeke announced to contest the Punjab assembly byelection from Gidderbaha, another fellow National Security Act (NSA) detainee of new MP Amritpal Singh , Kulwant Singh Raoke , 38, now wants to run for Barnala’s legislator.Cousin Maha Singh claimed that Kulwant had asked him to contact the panthic organisations for support.Kulwant, a Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) employee from Raoke Kalan in Moga district, was arrested under the NSA in March 2023 as an accomplice of Waris Punjab De head Amritpal Singh and lodged in the Dibrugarh central jail of Assam with the Khalistan advocate. His father, Charat Singh, had faced the NSA in 1987 and never returned since police had picked him up in March 1993.Charat’s younger brother, Gurmail Singh, died in June 1984’s military raid on the Golden Temple to flush out terrorists led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Maha Singh told TOI: “When I had a word with Kulwant Singh on Friday, he confirmed that he’d contest from Barnala and asked me to contact the panthic organisations to prepare the ground. I am on with that task.”A few days ago, a boy claiming to be the son of Bajeke had uploaded a video clip on social media to announce that his father will contest from Gidderbaha. The resounding victories of Amritpal Singh and Sarabjit Singh Khalsa (son of Indira Gandhi’s assassin Beant Singh) in the recent parliamentary elections in Khadoor Sahib and Faridkot, respectively, will encourage Bajeke and Raoke.Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring vacated the assembly seat of Gidderbaha upon becoming Ludhiana’s MP, while Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer quit as the legislator of Barnala to represent Sangrur in Parliament. Panthic groups eye two more assembly seats — Baba Bakala and Chabbewal — which are vacant since Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Raj Kumar Chabbewal became their respective MPs. The Punjab assembly speaker has declared these four seats vacant, so the Election Commission has six months to schedule the bypolls.
