New Delhi: Obesity has emerged as a major health burden across the globe. The condition itself grapples with its own set of challenges in battling the issue. Apart from the other problems faced by people who are obese, pregnant women in particular face more risks linked to obesity that is exacerbated by sedentary lifestyles that harm the well-being of both mother and child.

Dr Sunita Sharma, Senior Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Infertility Specialist, Fortis Nagarbhavi, Bangalore told News9, “Obesity in pregnancy represents a significant public health challenge in India. By enhancing awareness regarding the risks linked with obesity and inactivity and extending support for healthier lifestyle choices, we can significantly enhance health outcomes for both mothers and babies. Achieving this necessitates a collaborative effort involving healthcare providers, policymakers, and communities.”

“While combatting obesity and sedentary lifestyle is imperative, it’s crucial to approach the issue with sensitivity and support. Stigmatising obesity can exacerbate the problem. Therefore, efforts should concentrate on promoting overall health and well-being rather than fixating solely on weight loss.”

Women who are obese are at a higher risk of both maternal and fetal complications during the period of pregnancy. It poses major risks and considerations for the mother and the baby. However, having a high BMI can harm fertility by inhibiting regular ovulation. Even women who regularly ovulate have a higher BMI level and it may take longer for them to become pregnant.

Check weight loss tips for a pregnancy with obesity

Avoid empty calories: According to a study, researchers found that changes in diet were more effective than exercise alone in helping women lose weight gain and may help in creating a healthy pregnancy.

Exercise: It is always recommended to exercise or workout during pregnancy as it may help keep the weight in check.

Avoid diet fads: Pregnancy is not the time to try a new diet fad as these diets are often very calorie-restrictive.
