Osteoporosis: What leads to bone fractures and can it be reversed?

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that happens gradually when the bone mineral density and bone mass decrease. In India, women are more susceptible to osteoporosis, especially among postmenopausal women. "In this, the skeleton's structural integrity is weakened and bone density declines, making people more vulnerable to fractures, especially those involving weight-bearing bones," he added. Furthermore, several diseases and drugs can accelerate the breaking down of bone, increasing the risk of osteoporosis," said Dr Yadav. For the elderly population, Dr Yadav suggested keeping the environment safe so you don't fall, by using assistive technology, and maintaining good balance.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that happens gradually when the bone mineral density and bone mass decrease.

It continues to be a global health concern. In India, women are more susceptible to osteoporosis, especially among postmenopausal women. Studies suggest that more than 50% of women over 50 in the country suffer from low bone mass.

"Osteoporosis is a silent medical condition, especially among the elderly population," said Dr Akhilesh Yadav, Associate Director, Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, Max Hospital, Vaishali.

It is characterised by the gradual degeneration of bone tissue, which results in permeable, weaker bones that are easily fractured even from small falls or traumas.

Dr Yadav called it a "deceptive condition" that usually goes undiagnosed until a fracture happens, usually in the wrist, hip, or spine, leaving sufferers with pain, incapacity, and a lowered quality of life.

"In this, the skeleton's structural integrity is weakened and bone density declines, making people more vulnerable to fractures, especially those involving weight-bearing bones," he added.

WHAT CAUSES OSTEOPOROSIS?

Beyond a certain age, several factors play a role in osteoporosis development.

Hormonal changes including decreased testosterone levels in men and decreased estrogen levels in postmenopausal women, can cause this condition which are critical to bone metabolism.

Nutritional deficiencies restrict the body's ability to maintain appropriate bone density, particularly when it comes to inadequate consumption of calcium and vitamin D.

"An inactive lifestyle, smoking, and heavy consumption of alcohol are examples of lifestyle variables that aggravate bone loss. Furthermore, several diseases and drugs can accelerate the breaking down of bone, increasing the risk of osteoporosis," said Dr Yadav.

Rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, and endocrine problems are among the illnesses that can negatively impact bone health.

Besides this, some prolonged intake of cancer treatments like corticosteroids and anticonvulsants can also weaken bones.

CAN OSTEOPOROSIS BE REVERSED?

Osteoporosis cannot be completely stopped or reversed, but it can be treated with medication and lifestyle modifications.

Effective strategies include making sure you're getting enough calcium and vitamin D from foods like leafy greens, dairy products, and supplements if needed.

"Do weight-bearing exercises like jogging, walking, or resistance training to strengthen your bones and improve your balance. Avoid alcohol and smoking to maintain bone health," the expert advised.

For the elderly population, Dr Yadav suggested keeping the environment safe so you don't fall, by using assistive technology, and maintaining good balance.
