Lucknow: Challenging one’s brain is one of the most effective ways to stay away from Parkinson’s disease, according to experts.“There is no guaranteed way to prevent Parkinson’s disease, but certain lifestyle choices and habits may reduce the risk or delay its onset,” head of neurology, Prof Sanjeev Jha, said while speaking at an awareness programme at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) on Saturday.Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder , manifests through a variety of symptoms that affect movement and coordination. From tremors, stiffness, and slowness of movement to postural instability and freezing of gait, its effects are multifaceted and can profoundly affect daily life. As the disease advances, challenges with speech and swallowing may arise, along with cognitive changes and mood disturbances.Prof Vimal Kumar Paliwal listed out the steps to delay the risk. “A combination of aerobics, strength training, and balance exercises along with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, antioxidants, and lean proteins, limiting exposure to environmental toxins such as pesticides, herbicides, and industrial chemicals, can help. Protecting from trauma like head injuries and undertaking healthy brain activities like challenging the brain with activities like reading, puzzles, learning new skills, and socializing also play an effective role,” he said.Experts said that genetics also played a significant role in determining an individual’s susceptibility to the condition. Other speakers said that treatment for Parkinson’s typically involves Dopaminergic medications such as levodopa which were often prescribed to alleviate motor symptoms, while physical, occupational, and speech therapy could help individuals manage movement difficulties, improve mobility, and address communication issues. They emphasized that despite ongoing research efforts, there was no cure for the disease. However, advancements in medical science offer hope for improved treatments and better management strategies, they added.
