Pune car crash: Minor’s grandfather arrested for ‘wrongful confinement’ of family driver

They pressured him to falsely admit responsibility for the Porsche accident, as stated in the FIR. The minor’s father, currently in judicial custody, has also been booked in this case. The police are also examining the role of the minor’s grandfather in pressuring the driver to make a false confession. The minor’s father was arrested for providing a car without number plates and money to his underage son, who was known to drink and lacked a driving licence. A special court has remanded the minor’s father and the five restaurant employees to judicial custody until June 7.

Pune city police arrested the grandfather of a minor boy on Saturday, who was apprehended for allegedly driving a Porsche car at high speed, causing the death of two software engineers in the city on May 19. The grandfather, who is a well-known real estate agent in Pune, is accused of kidnapping and keeping the driver confined, based on a complaint from the driver of the Porsche.

Pune City Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said that the driver was forced to say he caused the accident. They made him believe he would get a reward and also threatened him with serious consequences if he didn’t agree.

According to the FIR filed at Yerawada police station early Saturday morning, the 42-year-old driver reported that on the night of May 19-20, the minor’s grandfather forced him into a BMW car while he was returning home from the police station.

The driver was then allegedly taken to the family’s bungalow, where the grandfather and the minor’s father snatched his mobile phone and confined him. They pressured him to falsely admit responsibility for the Porsche accident, as stated in the FIR.

The minor’s father, currently in judicial custody, has also been booked in this case.

When the driver failed to return home, his wife went to the accused’s residence on Monday, caused a ruckus and took him away with her. The driver then reported to the Crime Branch on Thursday, where his claims were verified, according to Kumar.

This FIR is the third related to the accident on May 19, where two IT engineers were killed when a speeding Porsche without number plates hit their motorcycle at the Kalyani Nagar junction. Initially, the minor was granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) on the same day but was later sent to an observation home until June 5 at the police’s request.

On Friday, Police Chief Amitesh Kumar mentioned that there was an attempt by the minor’s father to frame the driver as the one behind the wheels of the Porsche during the accident. “We are considering applying Section 201 of the Indian Penal Code for destroying evidence,” he said.

The driver initially claimed he was driving the Porsche, and the police are investigating whether this statement was made under duress. The police are also examining the role of the minor’s grandfather in pressuring the driver to make a false confession.

Police have checked records at the minor’s residence security cabin, which allegedly confirm that the minor took the car out that night. They have also seized CCTV footage from the residence.

Following information from the minor, a second FIR was lodged on May 20 against his father and six others, including the owner and managers of two Pune restaurants, for allegedly serving liquor to the minor and his friends before the accident.

The minor’s father was arrested for providing a car without number plates and money to his underage son, who was known to drink and lacked a driving licence. Five employees of the two restaurants were also arrested for serving liquor to the minor.

The accused were booked under Sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act and various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA). Additionally, Section 420 of the IPC was invoked against the minor’s father for allegedly cheating the government by not paying the Rs 1,759 registration fee at the Pune RTO for the Porsche. Other charges include Section 5/180 of the MVA and Section 65(e) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. A special court has remanded the minor’s father and the five restaurant employees to judicial custody until June 7.
