Pune, 15th July 2024: Following a directive from Pune MP and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol to clear city roads of massive encroachments, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a series of actions to remove unauthorized structures. Today marked the first day of the crackdown, with operations conducted on Gopalkrishna Gokhale Road (FC Road), Hadapsar, Nagar Road, and Dhankawadi.
On Gopalkrishna Gokhale Road, stretching from Deccan Gymkhana to Ferguson College, vendors selling clothes, shoes, books, women’s jewelry, and food items occupied both sides of the road, leaving little space for pedestrians. Today, the PMC began clearing these encroachments, confiscating goods from numerous stalls. Pune traffic police, Deccan Police station and other staff under the guidance of DCP (Zone 1) Sandeep Singh Gill and Add CP Manoj Patil were present to assist the PMC in the anti-encroachment drive.
Similarly, an anti-encroachment operation was carried out from Bhairoba Nala to Ravidarshan Chowk on the Pune-Solapur Highway by the Construction Department and Hadapsar Ward Office. During this operation, the team removed around 26,000 square feet of shed encroachments and concrete structures.
Many traders along the highway had expanded their businesses illegally, leading to daily traffic jams and forcing pedestrians to walk on the road. Despite multiple notices issued by the municipal encroachment and construction departments to remove the encroachments, the traders had ignored the warnings.
The operation, which began this morning with the assistance of two JCBs, successfully cleared 26,000 square feet of encroachments. In the Dhankawadi area, the PMC removed constructions, steps, and stalls encroaching on front and side margins. Additionally, a hotel occupying the front margin on Nagar Road was demolished.
