Punjab, Haryana to witness heavy to very heavy rain: IMD issues orange alert for several areas

The India Meteorological Department’s Chandigarh office has issued an orange alert (be prepared) predicting heavy rain across several Punjab and Haryana districts over the next few days. The rest of Punjab will experience heavy rain over the next two days, with widespread heavy rain expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. Similarly, in Haryana, excluding Sirsa, Fatehabad, Hisar, and Jind, the entire state is expected to witness heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning on Sunday. The rest of Haryana will also see heavy rain during these days, continuing until Wednesday. Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, was expected to witness heavy to very heavy rain from Saturday to Tuesday and heavy rain on Wednesday.

In Punjab, heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected on Sunday and Monday (June 30 and July 1) in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Roopnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Sangrur, and Mansa. The rest of Punjab will experience heavy rain over the next two days, with widespread heavy rain expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Similarly, in Haryana, excluding Sirsa, Fatehabad, Hisar, and Jind, the entire state is expected to witness heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning on Sunday. On Monday and Tuesday, Panchkula, Ambala, Yamuna Nagar, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Panipat, Sonipat, Rewari, Nuh, and Palwal districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. The rest of Haryana will also see heavy rain during these days, continuing until Wednesday.

The forecast warns of potential waterlogging in low-lying areas, rising water levels in rivers and seasonal streams, closure of underpasses, and damage to weak structures. Short-term disruptions to municipal services like water and electricity, and traffic congestion due to waterlogging are anticipated.

Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, was expected to witness heavy to very heavy rain from Saturday to Tuesday and heavy rain on Wednesday.

In the past 24 hours, significant rainfall has been recorded in several areas, including 66 mm in Bullowal Saunkri and 57.5 mm in Balachaur (in Nawanshahr) in Punjab.

Meanwhile, in Haryana on Saturday, Rohtak recorded 45 mm of rainfall, followed by 30 mm in Panipat, 22 mm in Hisar, and 12.5 mm in Indri (Karnal).

In Punjab, the average maximum temperature has risen by 0.5 degrees compared to Friday. However, this temperature is considered near normal for the state. The highest maximum temperature recorded in the state was 42.5 degrees Celsius in Gurdaspur, with a rise of 1.5 degrees. Conversely, the highest maximum temperature recorded in Sirsa was 41.2 degrees Celsius.

The IMD informed that, as per the current status of the monsoon, the conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into some parts of western India, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab, and the remaining parts of the western states, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu, during the next 23 days.
