Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond Season 1 Review: A riveting and taut tale of patriotism, politics, and modern warfare

Story: The series follows an R&AW agent and his team who strike back on Pakistan post the deadly Pulwama attacks. The agents endeavour to bring back a captured pilot amid hybrid warfare and Pakistan's lies in global media while exposing the conniving neighbouring country. Ranneeti perfectly encapsulates this thought as it delves into the intricacies of the airstrike on Pakistan’s Balakot as an answer to the dreaded Pulwama attack. Jimmy Sheirgill is par excellence as Kashyap Sinha, a camphor-sniffing R&AW agent once hailed as the best agent on the field, now dealing with PTSD after a botched mission. Still, with outstanding performances, intelligent writing, and masterfully interwoven plotlines, Ranneeti is a must-watch for fans of cerebral thrillers.

Review: Politics or war, it’s all about perception. Ranneeti perfectly encapsulates this thought as it delves into the intricacies of the airstrike on Pakistan’s Balakot as an answer to the dreaded Pulwama attack. Anyone even superficially following one of India’s greatest defence operations will spot the similarities between the true events that followed and this fictional story. One has seen the airstrike saga on-screen a number of times. But what separates this one is the peek into what goes behind the scenes and that it sidesteps the usual tropes of this genre for the most part.

This is a layered watch where the intelligent writing keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the treatment ensures you stay intrigued throughout. Director Santosh Singh skilfully combines an actioner, political drama, and spy thriller, doing justice to each aspect. The aerial action is as thrilling as seeing Indian agents outplay Pakistani terrorists or seeing the new form of hybrid war where international news and social media can make or break a nation. And each track is masterfully created to complement the other as well as the overall narrative.

Jimmy Sheirgill is par excellence as Kashyap Sinha, a camphor-sniffing R&AW agent once hailed as the best agent on the field, now dealing with PTSD after a botched mission. Ashutosh Rana as the fiercely sharp and evil Raqib is the perfect choice for playing his archnemesis. Lara Dutta gets the nuances of a communications officer, Manisha, perfectly. Elnaaz Nourozi and Satyajeet Dubey also stand out in their roles.

Another highlight of the series is its dialogues. A prime example is Manisha saying, “Cheekh kar bataye hue sach se zyada bharosa kaan mein kahe hue jhooth par hota hai (A secret whisper carries more weight than a truth shouted from the rooftops).”

The series does have a few predictable and far-fetched moments, especially regarding one of its pivotal characters. Still, with outstanding performances, intelligent writing, and masterfully interwoven plotlines, Ranneeti is a must-watch for fans of cerebral thrillers.
