Bayern Munich’s search for a head coach could be coming to a close amid new reports Monday that the club has decided on a main target.

That target is former head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who was sacked by Bayern little more than a year ago under a previous sporting regime and is currently leading the Germany men’s national team in preparations for this summer’s EURO 2024 tournament.

From Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, via @iMiaSanMia:

Bayern have made their decision - the club wants Julian Nagelsmann as new coach. Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are in concrete talks and negotiations with Nagelsmann’s agents, talks are advanced. Bayern are offering a 3 to 4 year contract. Nagelsmann has not given his final approval yet. The DFB are still hoping he would extend his contract as Germany coach until 2026. As of now, Nagelsmann has neither accepted nor rejected either offer - but the tendency is rather towards Bayern.

There is no other way to put it — this would be a wild turn of events.

Bayern shocked everyone by firing Nagelsmann last March with the line ‘the treble is in danger’ — but Nagelsmann’s replacement, Thomas Tuchel, struggled to impress. By the end of last season, two top board members were out — CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić.

Then Bayern went the summer transfer window without a replacement sporting director — until Christoph Freund’s arrival — and the winter transfer window without the pending arrival of its new top board member for sport, Max Eberl. Now the club’s position on Nagelsmann seems to have changed, amounting to one huge mea culpa.

Now Tuchel is on his way out, and it looks like Nagelsmann could well be on his way back.

Meaning Bayern will enter this summer transfer window with a head coach Germany fans will hope is still away at the EUROs.
