Vladimir Putin said Russia will not tolerate any threats and its strategic nuclear forces are always on alert.

"Russia will do everything to prevent a global clash, but at the same time, we will not allow anyone to threaten us. Our strategic forces are always on alert," Putin said.

Speaking from the Red Square before thousands of soldiers dressed in ceremonial attire, Putin accused "Western elites" of forging conflicts around the world.

The Russian president has repeatedly asserted the ongoing war in Ukraine as an existential battle against "Nazism".

Last year, Russia revoked its ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and pulled out of an arms reduction agreement with the United States.
