The opposition bloc contested for the Speaker's post after the NDA government did not commit to giving the Deputy Speaker's post to the opposition.

With Awadhesh's name for the post, the opposition has fielded a candidate with strong political and symbolic capability.

Awadhesh Prasad, a Dalit who won polls from Faizabad, was proposed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the sources stated.

His triumph over the BJP's Lallu Singh by a margin of more than 50,000 votes made headlines as the opposition lambasted the BJP, stating that it was unable to win the seat in spite of inaugurating Ram Temple. It is also important to note that he is a Dali who fought and won the general seat in the Lok Sabha polls, which gives him strong symbolic credentials.
