Actor Adhyayan Suman recalled how filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali broke into tears after he nailed a five-minute monologue in the upcoming streaming series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Adhyayan, who debuted as an actor several years ago but experienced an extended period of inactivity, is aiming to rebound with the Netflix series, in which he plays a supporting role.

Speaking to Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, the actor recalled the gratifying experience on the Heeramandi set. He admitted that he was terrified the day before the shoot, and could not sleep. But his father, Shekhar Suman, made sure that he was prepared for the scene. “On the first day, I was giving cues to Manisha Koirala. You can’t understand Bhansali’s sharpness. He heard my delivery in Urdu, and he looked at me and said, ‘Your dad taught you, didn’t he?'” Shekhar said that Adhyayan’s skills as a performer are to be credited, because to nail a shot in one take, especially with a filmmaker who is known to be demanding, is an achievement.

Five minutes. This must be a first in the history of Bhansali Productions, but Adhyayan nailed it in one go. He got up from his chair, okayed the shot, and hugged Adhyayan with tears in his eyes. The next thing I know, I get a call from him and he says, ‘Where was this boy all this time?'” Shekhar said, revealing that he started crying when Bhansali called him, and that he hadn’t cried like that since losing his elder son. He invited Adhyayan to tell the story himself. And Adhyayan did. He said, “When I was doing that scene, I swear on my career, I felt my dad’s spirit had taken control of me. I felt if I don’t deliver in that moment, it was game over. I felt that he was inside me. And that’s when sir got up and cried and kissed my hand. It went silent for five minutes, and then the entire set of 500 people clapped. My entire life flashed in front of me. All my pain, all my struggle, it came to me.” Heeramandi, a period drama set in the world of courtesans, stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Fardeen Khan and others. The show will be released on Netflix on May 1.
