Salem/Namakkal: A 57-year-old man died of ‘scrub typhus’ fever at the Salem Govt Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital (SGMKMCH) on Friday.The deceased has been identified as , P Kandasamy, a mason from Indira Nagar at Namagiripettai.He was admitted to a private hospital at Rasipuram with severe fever on June 29.
However, he passed away on Friday, without responding to treatment.The official said the scrub typhus fever was caused by a parasite called Orientia Tsutsugamushi and was transmitted to humans through infected mites.

Salem/Namakkal: A 57-year-old man died of ‘scrub typhus’ fever at the Salem Govt Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital (SGMKMCH) on Friday.The deceased has been identified as , P Kandasamy, a mason from Indira Nagar at Namagiripettai.He was admitted to a private hospital at Rasipuram with severe fever on June 29. He was referred to the SGMKMCH after two days.The govt hospital diagnosed him with ‘scrub typhus’ fever.Dr K Poonkodi, deputy director of health, Namakkal district, told TOI that Kandasamy had got himself discharged on July 7 before his treatment was completed. He got himself readmitted on July 11 after his condition worsened. However, he passed away on Friday, without responding to treatment.The official said the scrub typhus fever was caused by a parasite called Orientia Tsutsugamushi and was transmitted to humans through infected mites. “If he had cooperated with doctors, proper treatment could have saved his life,” Poonkodi added.Health department officials in the district organized a special medical camp in the area on Saturday. They conducted health screenings for the people residing in 840 households. A health department official said, “No case of fever was reported until the evening.” She added that a similar camp would be held again on Monday.Meanwhile, the Namagiripettai civic body’s sanitation workers carried out fogging in the area and sprayed disinfectants in water tanks, sumps and overhead tanks.
