The scene outside a Tim Hortons in Toronto recently became a grim picture of the growing employment crisis faced by international students in Canada. Hundreds of students, including many from India and the sub-continent, were seen queued up, hoping to secure part-time jobs at the popular coffee and fast-food chain.
This desperate hunt for employment has been captured in a video by an Indian student, now viral on social media.

The student who shared the video, Nishat, has been searching for a part-time job for over a month, and shared his experience in the video. Despite arriving at the job fair 30 minutes early, he was dismayed to find a long line of more than 100 applicants already ahead of him.
"Even the white people were shocked, thinking what is happening here," he remarked in Hindi in the video. He also shared he printed his CV for $2 (Rs 122).
The Tim Hortons staff collected resumes and inquired about the applicants' schedules, promising to call for interviews and dispersing the crowd. However, the uncertainty lingered as Nishat continued his job search elsewhere in the city, far from his home. "I don't know if I will find a job at either store. So this was my day full of struggle," he lamented.
The video quickly went viral, bringing to light the broader issue of unemployment and job scarcity in Canada. Many other Indian students echoed his frustrations in comments, sharing their own struggles in finding a job.
One user commented, "Maturity is when you understand that they will never call you for an interview." Another advised, "Learn construction, handyman, repair, or driving trucks. Canada has demand for these jobs." The hardships were further emphasized by another user who said, "It's been 6 months and I'm still looking for my part-time job!"

The dire situation was summed up by a former student: "This is not the Canada I came to 8 years ago. It was full of opportunities, growth, and what dreams are made of. I don't even recognize this country anymore. Everyone had plenty of growth and employment opportunities. I found a part-time job in 2 weeks while studying, and the stories I hear now break my heart. To all the future students that are planning to come here, please don't be fooled. Do your research and then make a decision."
A series of commenters shared how long they have been looking for jobs – some 10 months, some six or some three but to no avail.
A fourth wrote: “Just go back to an India. May be there is more jobs over there nowadays than in Canada.”
