Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati of Uttarakhand's Jyotir Math has defended Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of Uttarakhand'shas defended Congress leader's recent remarks on Hinduism in the Lok Sabha. In a video posted on social media platform X, Shankaracharya Saraswati stated, "Upon hearing claims that Rahul Gandhi made anti-Hindu remarks, I listened to his entire speech and found no fault in his words. Rahul Gandhi correctly stated that violence has no place in Hinduism."

Saraswati condemned the dissemination of edited clips and partial truths that misrepresented Gandhi's speech, calling it a criminal act deserving of punishment, regardless of whether the perpetrators are from the media or other outlets.

He clarified that Gandhi's comments were directed at the ruling party and not at Hinduism. "Rahul Gandhi later clarified that his criticism was aimed at the party leading the Centre, accusing them of promoting violence under the guise of religion," Saraswati added.

Rahul Gandhi's controversial remarks were made on July 2 during a debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address in Parliament. Gandhi said that all religions, including Hinduism, advocate for courage and non-violence. He pointed out that Lord Shiva embodies fearlessness and non-violence, symbolised by the abhay mudra (a gesture of reassurance and safety).

His comments triggered significant protests from the ruling benches, with BJP MPs reacting strongly to his criticism.

Narendra Modi Prime Ministerresponded by accusing Gandhi of labeling the entire Hindu community as violent, leading to a heated debate in Parliament. The Speaker ultimately expunged several contentious remarks from the official record.

In his defence, Rahul Gandhi reiterated that his remarks were specifically targeting the BJP. He underscored that neither the BJP, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), nor Prime Minister Modi represent the entirety of Hindu society.
