What is Songkran?

The three-day festival marks the beginning of the Thai New Year. The celebrations start from the first full moon in April. This year, Songkran was observed from April 13 to April 15.

How is Songkran celebrated?

Songkran is basically, a water festival. People celebrate this important event on the Buddhist calendar by roaming around the city in groups and throwing water at each other using buckets and water pistols like the pichkaris we're used to seeing back home during Holi.

On day 1, people perform a water-pouring ceremony. They offer scented water to Lord Buddha. As a part of the celebration, young family members pay respect to their elders by offering water on their hands and feet.
