Soumya Vishwanathan murder: Supreme Court seeks convicts' response on State's appeal against bail

Viswanathan was a journalist working with India Today when she was found dead in her car in Vasant Kunj in September 2008. According to the police, Vishwanathan was returning home late at night from her office when she was chased and shot. Four men were convicted in November 2023 for committing the murder - Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Ajay Kumar and Baljeet Malik. This was challenged by all four men before the Delhi High Court. In February 2024, the Delhi High Court suspended their life sentence and granted them bail until the disposal of appeals against their conviction and life sentence.

Viswanathan was a journalist working with India Today when she was found dead in her car in Vasant Kunj in September 2008.

Forensic reports indicated that she died due to a bullet wound in her head. According to the police, Vishwanathan was returning home late at night from her office when she was chased and shot.

Four men were convicted in November 2023 for committing the murder - Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Ajay Kumar and Baljeet Malik. The four men were also found guilty under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and sentenced to undergo life imprisonment by the trial court. This was challenged by all four men before the Delhi High Court.

In February 2024, the Delhi High Court suspended their life sentence and granted them bail until the disposal of appeals against their conviction and life sentence. The Court reasoned that they had already been in prison for 14 years.
