Persistent sadness: Feeling empty or sad for extended periods every day and experiencing crying spells for a couple of weeks can be a sign of peripartum depression.

Feeling guilty: Extreme guilt, thoughts of not being a good mother, having excessive concerns about the baby's health, and not doing enough for the baby are often more than just baby blues.

Trouble with sleep: Some degree of sleep deprivation is normal due to the baby’s unpredictable schedule, but if you find yourself unable to rest even when you are exhausted, it is something to look out for.

Restlessness, anxiety, and pessimism: You might find yourself worrying excessively or feeling irritable all the time, and not feeling hopeful about the future.

Lack of interest in activities: Hobbies and self-care are important to your well-being during this life-changing experience, but if you find yourself uninterested in things that you enjoyed previously, it could be a red flag.

Inability to bond with the baby: If you find yourself doubting your ability to take care of the baby or bond with it, it is a symptom that needs to be brought to the notice of your doctor immediately as it puts both the baby and you at risk.

Weight loss or gain: If you find your appetite unusually low or if you find your weight changing significantly.

Inability to concentrate: While you might just be exhausted from caring for a young child, if you find yourself struggling to make rational decisions or remember normal day-to-day things, reach out for help.

According to Dr Dhurjati, identifying depressive symptoms early and reaching out to a mental health professional shouldn’t be delayed.

Awareness among partners and other family members about the mental health concerns faced by mothers during this period can ensure that she gets all the practical help and emotional support she needs to help her recover. Adequate rest, sleep, regular exercise, and a nutritious diet help in the healing process. Even a small part of the day, the me-time, where they can pursue things of interest to them, go for a walk in nature, read, listen to music, or follow basic self-care routines, can help a lot of new moms.

Post-childbirth, the focus often shifts entirely to the baby, leaving the mother to fend for herself. Remembering that maternal health is closely tied to the baby’s well-being is important. Providing the necessary support to the mother is key to ensuring a happy baby and a happy mom.
