Thomas Tuchel: Bayern Munich defeat to VfB Stuttgart “totally avoidable” but also “already forgotten”

It was a frustrating night for Bayern Munich, losing to VfB Stuttgart in Stuttgart for the first time in over a decade and allowing Die Schwäben to move within two points of the Bavarian giants in the race to finish second.

“The defeat was totally avoidable,” Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said after the loss in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We actually had chances in the second half and then we were inattentive shortly before the end. Honestly, this is a game we’ll have to get over as quickly as possible. That is already forgotten today. The next four days matter.”

But will it be different to today’s limp performance against Stuttgart? If things went so badly today, can they be good enough to win against the 14-time-European champions Real Madrid? “Yes, 100%. After all the post-match interviews today, I won’t waste another minute on this game.”

No words in the world would have been enough to inspire confidence in this scenario and Tuchel knows it. But, simultaneously, he can point to the 3-2 capitulation against Heidenheim, the negativity and doubts that followed such a loss and the subsequent battle and grit Bayern showed against Arsenal in the Londoners’ home that few had expected. If anyone can bounce back from a disappointing loss to a positive Champions League night, it will be Tuchel. Having pulled off this trick once, it will be up to Tuchel to do it again in the Santiago Bernabeu. No pressure.
