Thomas Tuchel laments injury situation at Bayern Munich ahead of Champions League showdown vs. Real Madrid

Blow after blow after blow. Eric Dier’s head collision, possible concussion and bleeding caught the eye and diverted attention away from Raphaël Guerreiro’s ankle issues, but both had to come off eventually. Rapha Guerreiro was getting minutes to be ready for Wednesday and now he’s on crutches. We then took a risk with Upa who wasn’t supposed to play for more than 30 minutes. How about an evisceration of a Bayern Munich player who has gotten a free pass for far too long?

Blow after blow after blow. After Bayern Munich’s Matthjis De Ligt and Konrad Laimer suffered injury issues against Eintrach Frankfurt last week and Dayot Upamecano pulling up with a problem the day before, it was Eric Dier and Raphaël Guerreiro’s turn to be hurt today. Eric Dier’s head collision, possible concussion and bleeding caught the eye and diverted attention away from Raphaël Guerreiro’s ankle issues, but both had to come off eventually. But it wasn’t just them that to suffer.

Speaking after the match, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Thomas Tuchel revealed that the medical team insisted on multiple players being unable to play the full match due to injury concerns: “We had a meeting with the medical team before the game - they were like: ‘60 minutes for this, 30 minutes for that, 60 minutes for that, this one can’t play at all’. Unfortunately, this has been the situation the whole season. Rapha Guerreiro was getting minutes to be ready for Wednesday and now he’s on crutches. Eric Dier felt a bit something in his thigh before the game, but that wasn’t the reason (he got subbed off) - it was due to the head knock. We couldn’t take any more risks with him. We then took a risk with Upa who wasn’t supposed to play for more than 30 minutes. This has unfortunately been the story of our season.”

How does one juggle all these injury concerns, manage the load on the players and come up with an adequate match plan against one of the best teams in Germany? Perhaps it was impossible, especially with the squad at Tuchel’s disposal. When asked about Champions League opponents Real Madrid rotating 10 players, @iMiaSanMia captured Tuchel’s frustrated response: “You can do that when you have enough players.”
