Risks associated with vampire facial

As per reports, at least three women were infected with HIV after receiving a ' vampire facial ' at a spa in New Mexico in 2018. "During the summer 2018, the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) was notified of a diagnosis of HIV infection in a woman with no known HIV risk factors who reported exposure to needles from cosmetic platelet-rich plasma microneedling facials (vampire facials) received at a spa in spring 2018," the US CDC has said in a report released last week. The CDC says, "The procedure involves drawing a client’s blood, separating the blood into its components of plasma and cells, and using single-use disposable or multiuse sterile equipment to inject the PRP into the face for cosmetic purposes, such as skin rejuvenation and reducing the appearance of acne scars."The vampire facial, also known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves using the patient's own blood to rejuvenate the skin. During the procedure, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient's arm and centrifuged to separate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from other components. The PRP, which contains growth factors and proteins, is then injected into the face or applied topically after microneedling to stimulate collagen production and promote skin renewal. This process is believed to improve skin texture, tone, and elasticity, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance overall skin radiance. While the vampire facial has gained popularity for its potential cosmetic benefits, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy remains limited, and results may vary among individuals. In 2013, Kim Kardashian shared a selfie of her face where she had undergone vampire facial. A few years later she wrote on her website that she would not get this treatment done again and it was rough and painful for her. This case of HIV transmission through a facial procedure is believed to be the first-ever HIV transmission related to a cosmetic procedure documented in the US.The vampire facial generally has a low risk of adverse effects, but there are some potential risks to consider. These include mild injection site reactions such as swelling, redness, bruising, or discomfort, which typically resolve within a few days. In rare cases, there is a risk of infection at the injection sites, allergic reactions to components in the PRP, or nerve damage if incorrect injection techniques are used. Excessive inflammatory responses or uneven results may also occur, and there is a theoretical risk of transmitting blood-borne infections if proper blood handling and sterilization procedures are not followed. Scarring or skin texture irregularities may develop if there is excessive trauma to the skin during the procedure. It's important to consult with a qualified healthcare provider to assess individual risk factors and ensure that the procedure is performed safely.
