‘Vast majority’ of Chelsea players still support Mauricio Pochettino

Say what you will about the job Mauricio Pochettino has done at Chelsea this season, but the one aspect where he’s unequivocally succeeded has been to create a familial bond among all these disparate random pieces that have been assembled by our galaxy-brain-trust of squad-building. As per the Evening Standard, Pochettino “retains the support” of the “vast majority” of the Chelsea squad, who would also prefer some “stability” at the position, especially after the three full-timers (plus one interim) last season. How much the Board will take the players’ opinions into account remains to be seen. Player Power was certainly a feature of the early Abramovich years, but those players had earned their power. Say what you will about the job Mauricio Pochettino has done at Chelsea this season, but the one aspect where he’s unequivocally succeeded has been to create a familial bond among all these disparate random pieces that have been assembled by our galaxy-brain-trust of squad-building.

As with any family, it’s not completely free of random dysfunction sometimes, but the general atmosphere at the club seems to have remained pretty good throughout the season, and the team have remained united behind the manager — despite the disappointing results, the increasing discontent among the fanbase, and all the other usual challenges of a season.

Then again, Pochettino doesn’t exactly come across as a major disciplinarian, and while he’s increasingly griped about the squad’s age and relative immaturity, there have been no apparent punishments handed down for the various instances of petulance and immaturity shown on the pitch. No consequences and a Argentinian barbecues? Where do I sign up?
