Viñales tops the pile as Quartararo surprises at Mugello

MotoGP™ returned to action at the Gran Premio d’Italia Brembo for the start of what could be a crucial weekend at legendary Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello. The fastest at the end of Friday’s exhilarating Free Practice 1 was Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing), who after a strong start to his weekend crossed the line to set a 1:46.140. Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) took fourth after briefly topping the pile before a crash at turn 10 - putting an end to the rookie’s session. Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) rounded out the top five as all talk surrounding the rider market continues here in Italy. Behind the #89 was Gresini Racing MotoGP™’s Marc Marquez in sixth, with the eight-time World Champion having a rock-solid start to the weekend. Meanwhile, Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) was behind in seventh to end what was a solid start for the Noale factory.

Reigning World Champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) was eighth after one of his lap times was reinstated. This allowed the #1 to end Free Practice 1 ahead of Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™ Team), who took ninth after setting his time on his fourth lap in what was a strong session. However, everything did not go as planned for Rins who suffered a crash at San Donato early on in the session, before returning to track later on. Behind the #42 and taking the final spot inside the top 10 went the way of Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™).

Further down the order, Ducati Lenovo Team’s Enea Bastianini will be hoping to improve in Italy, ending the opening session down in 18th position with room for improvement. Finally, Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) made his return to action this weekend to the delight of fans around the world with the iconic #44 wildcarding this weekend in the premier class.
