South Africa escaped with a narrow four-run win over Bangladesh in a Group D low-scoring thriller at New York’s Nassau County Stadium on June 10.

Defending just 114 runs for a win, the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje collectively restricted the Bangladesh batting line-up to 109-7 in the run-chase.

South African paceman Baartman busted Jaker Ali’s bat with searing pace in the penultimate over of the match. While the bat seemed visibly broken, Ali whacked it face-first onto his knee to put the blade out of its misery.

During the mid-overs break, the Bangladesh lower-order batter signaled to his dressing room and asked for a new bat before heading into the decisive final over of the match.

Regardless, Jaker Ali’s new bat made little difference to Bangladesh’s cause as he failed to dispatch South African spinner Keshav Maharaj in the final over.

With 11 runs required off the last six deliveries, the Bangladesh tail managed to reap just six runs to fall four runs short of their target.

The outcome helped South Africa to qualify for the next round of the T20 World Cup 2024, having registered three wins in three matches so far in the tournament.
