New Delhi: Mohammed Abdul Arfath , a 25-year-old Indian student, who was missing in the United States since last month, was found dead in Ohio ’s Cleveland , according to the Indian embassy in New York . The Indian embassy in New York had earlier said that it was in touch with Arfath's family and was working with "law enforcement agencies to locate him."
Arfath’s father, Mohammed Saleem, told The Indian Express , “The mental torture is that we do not know why this happened to him. We do not know what happened. There is no information. We have no clue… (we are) spending time in total darkness. We spent many harrowing weeks since his disappearance on March 7, and desperately hoped he would be found alive. But all we are getting back is his body.”
"His dream was to eventually settle in the US . He was delighted when the Rs 43 lakh education loan he had applied for was sanctioned," Mohammed Saleem told the media outlet.
Earlier, Mohammed Saleem said that Arfath last spoke to him on March 7, and since then he had not been in touch with his family. Arfath's father had lodged a missing persons complaint with Cleveland Police. However, on March 19, according to PTI, Arfath's family received a call from an unidentified person, who claimed that Arfath had been kidnapped allegedly by a gang selling drugs and demanded USD 1,200 to release him. The caller threatened to sell Arfath's kidneys if the ransom was not paid.
