Air India Express crisis: 5 flights cancelled in Kolkata, 75 across India; Airline expects normal ops by Sunday – Details inside

The operations of Tata-owned Air India Express had already started improving from Friday, May 10, on a slower note as the cabin crew started joining back. However, the operations of international flights were expected to be better from Friday, May 10, onwards with the availability of more cabin crew. The operations of Tata-owned Air India Express had already started improving from Friday, May 10, on a slower note as the cabin crew started joining back. It is anticipated that the normal operations of the airline will resume from Sunday, May 12. However, the operations of international flights were expected to be better from Friday, May 10, onwards with the availability of more cabin crew.

Additionally, cancellation of 45-50 flights are expected today.

Air India Express cabin crew were on a strike (mass sick leave) from Tuesday night, May 7, which eventually resulted in flight disruption. As a result, over 170 flights were called off on Thursday evening, May 9, while 75 flights were cancelled yesterday, May 10. In fact, the airline issued a termination letter to 25 cabin crew members who went on strike.

AI Express cancels 75 flights on Friday, expects normal ops by Sunday: Official

Air India Express on Friday cancelled five flights on four routes from Kolkata as the airline is making efforts to get back to normalcy following the cabin crew-related crisis. The airline cancelled two flights between Kolkata and Hyderabad, one each to Chennai, Cochin and Ayodhya. Nine flights were delayed at the Delhi airport.

Besides 120 cancellations, the airline operated 246 flights to various destinations of which 20 flights were operated by Air India and two by Vistara.

As per the officials, Air India Express incurred a revenue loss of approximately Rs 30 crore due to the flight cancellation in various cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, among others.

As per an official, the airline will conduct a fitness check for the cabin crew who are joining back after the strike.

The strike was a subject to protest against alleged mismanagement at the airline and lack of equality in treatment of staff. The airline has around 6,000 employees, out of which 2,000 are cabin crew members.
