Apple’s software support for iPhones is less than Samsung and Google flagship Android phones

Among various features and enhanced build quality, OEMs are specifically taking a note of software support. Google and Samsung have announced that their flagship models will offer 7 years of software support , which is longer than what Apple offers.Apple recently revealed that its current flagship iPhone 15 Pro will get at least 5 years of software support. These requirements include providing statements of compliance that detail the duration of security update support offered for the products.Since iPhones come under the ‘internet-capable products’, Apple is required to comply with the UK’s PSTI regulation. Another thing to mention is that Apple provides security to all eligible phones at the same time.Unlike Apple, Android OEMs usually have different timelines for rolling out security or milestone updates according to their deal to use Android OS on their phones.Currently, Google Pixel 8 series and Galaxy S24 series are flagship smartphones that provide 7 years of Android and security updates.

This is significant because hasn’t really provided a specific number of years an iPhone will get software support after its launch.The UK's Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulation came into effect on April 29, and it aims to enhance the security of consumer internet-connected devices, particularly those in the Internet of Things (IoT) category.It essentially mandates manufacturers, importers, and distributors of such products in the UK to adhere to specific security requirements. These requirements include providing statements of compliance that detail the duration of security update support offered for the products.Since iPhones come under the ‘internet-capable products’, Apple is required to comply with the UK’s PSTI regulation. In a compliance statement published for the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple revealed that its “defined support period” is a “minimum five years from the first supply date.” The “first supply date” is mentioned as September 22, 2023 – the day iPhone 15 series went on sale.It is to be noted that Apple has provided more than five years of security updates for its various iPhone models way before Google-owned Android decided to extend the support. Another thing to mention is that Apple provides security to all eligible phones at the same time.Unlike Apple, Android OEMs usually have different timelines for rolling out security or milestone updates according to their deal to use Android OS on their phones.Currently, Google Pixel 8 series and Galaxy S24 series are flagship smartphones that provide 7 years of Android and security updates.
