Many tech experts, in the last few months, have talked about how AI is the future and that use of the technology will only grow as time passes by. While some are apprehensive of AI’s downsides, arguing that it might replace human beings at what they do, others have a positive approach when it comes to the emerging technology. And Dell Technologies India’s Atul Mehta - Senior Director and General Manager, India Consumer Channel – belongs to the latter school of thought. Not only does he believe that AI will have a positive impact on the future, he also agrees that it will coexist with humans.

During Dell's recent event showcasing the latest Alienware, XPS, and Inspiron series of laptops, I had the opportunity to sit down with Mehta for an exclusive chat. Clad in formal attire with a self-assured look on his face, Mehta shared insights into the newly launched laptops, the future of AI, Dell's efforts in the gaming sector, and more.

"AI will have a positive impact only. There are some IDC projections according to which latest by 2027, 60 percent of PCs will be AI-enabled. So, we are working very closely with our partners to see how we can improve those experiences for our consumers," said Mehta.

The moment I walked through the doors leading up to the event, I was greeted by a kiosk that was generating AI-avatars of all attendees present at the event. Curious to know if Dell had plans to unveil any other AI devices in the future apart from laptops, I asked the same from Mehta.

"Right now, we'll be discussing and launching only the AI-enabled PCs. So that's the reason all of us are here. For other announcements, you probably will have to wait for the second half of the year," he said.

I then proceeded to ask about AI and where he stands on the whole AI replacing humans’ debate that has been going on ever since the launch of ChatGPT. Responding to this, he said that AI devices will help humans in being more productive as well as effective.

"So, it's not about replacing one another," he added. Focusing on Dell and its plans for AI-enabled devices, Mehta said, "We as a PC organisation in the consumer space want to make devices which can enable our consumers to be more productive and efficient at their work. We want to give our consumers, be it gamers or working professionals, a great experience so it's not about AI replacing humans."

I then remarked that it basically is about existing together, to which Mehta said, "Absolutely, it's about enabling the overall ecosystem to be more productive in future."

As mentioned already, Dell unveiled new AI-powered laptops during the event. All laptops sported familiar designs and promised AI upgrades that would make their lives easier. But there’s a reason to this. As per Mehta, one would not find any changes from a design structure standpoint as the company focuses more on adding features which can help their consumers from an interface standpoint.

"At Dell, Innovation is our DNA. (We focus on) our design culture, latest and greatest technology adoption, performance of the products that we give to our consumers, and last but not the least, sustainability. Everything we do, we make sure that it is sustainable, be it the material we use, features we have etc. From a design structure standpoint, you will not see any changes. It's more to do with adding more features which can help our consumers from an interface standpoint," he said.

Out of the laptops unveiled, I couldn’t help but notice the all-new Alienware. The device, priced at Rs 1,49,999, was showcased during the event and I also got to experience it for a while.

We all know that the Alienware series of laptops have been a hit amongst gamers for a long time. And Mehta told me that Dell has a way of connecting with the community.

He said, "We recently opened three gaming stores in India, one in Delhi, and the other two in Kolkata and Hyderabad. We want our consumers, primarily gamers, to come and experience our flagship product, the Alienware (in these stores). For that, we have various initiatives. One of them is an online initiative called Gaming Fridays. As part of this, influencers live-stream their gameplay for us. Another initiative that we have is Gaming Saturdays where influencers visit our stores and play along with other gamers in the stores. This is kind of a weekly activity. And then there are other multi-city activities for instance we participated in Comic Con recently. So, this is how we connect with this community. And Alienware is a flagship product, with the greatest and latest features. Now, in the new avatar, it will be more AI enabled."

But Alienware isn’t the only gaming laptop in the market. Companies like Asus, HP, Lenovo and others are also constantly unveiling new products, trying to cater to the gamers in the country. In such a scenario, how does Dell tries to remain a step ahead?

Mehta answers, "Every person in this organisation works on four key things starting from design language, latest technologies like AI, performance and sustainability. These are the four key tenets that help us to be on top of our game all the time, and give the best experience to our consumers."
