Smartphone users are well aware of the Google app that offers a range of elements, including Discover feed, weather updates and a search bar, among other notable items. However, the company could soon alter the placement of the search bar. According to 9To5Google, the bottom search bar is currently undergoing testing as a part of the Material 3 redesign.

According to the report, the company was earlier spotted testing the bottom search bar placement in 2021. The report cited an X (formerly called Twitter) user who spotted the feature on an Android device. Based on the screengrab, after a user searches for a query, the search bar is displayed at the bottom, unlike the top placement in the current stable build.

The search bar is placed above the Discover, Search and Saved icons and matches the Material 3 design. A similar pill-shaped design is available on iOS. The change could help improve the one-handed usability of the app on smartphones with a large display and users with small hands.

Within the search bar are options to explore the web via a microphone or use Google Lens to upload an image to look for similar results. Users will likely also be able to tap on the search bar to edit the text and search for a different query. The app uses a blue tint and not the Dynamic Color. However, it does offer clear demarcation from the web results.

The new search bar will help add a more modern look to the app in the future. Speaking of other updates around Google, the tech giant is also gearing up to launch the Find My Device network. Announced in 2023, the network could help locate missing smartphones, Bluetooth audio products and trackers using another Android device. It will help users "locate [eligible] devices even if they're offline".
