Since the introduction of RCS messaging standard — , Messages app has made it easier for users to view external media and website links. However, it has had its fair share of problems in recent times as scammers and hackers often send shady or malware links to access the personal data of the users.

According to a report by PiunikaWeb, Google is reportedly testing a new pop-up toggle for its Messages app that will warn users when they attempt to click on links sent by people not in their contact list. This new feature is aimed at providing user safety.

The pop-up will have a caption reading “Caution”, which will act as a warning before someone opens an unknown link. This popup was first spotted by a tipster on X named AssembleDebug. Further, it will have a two-step process, with another smaller warning sign stating “Caution with possible risk,” which acts as an extra layer of verification before anyone wants to access the received link.

This feature is expected to roll out soon globally and we can expect to save users from falling for phishing scams. It is now available in the 20240402_01_RCO0 or newer beta version of Google Messages. The exact timeline of the feature’s rollout hasn’t been made public by Google.
