Google Photos to compete with Instagram and X, planning a revamp with social focused sharing page

In the latest update, Google Photos is planning to revamp the application by adding a social-focused sharing page. For now, Google Photos is the home to all the photos and videos, which provides backup services. While staying true to its services, Google Photos never stepped back from updating the app with new features and editing tools. The overhauled sharing page will be similar to what Instagram likes page looks like. Google Photos for now is only a service which provides a backup for photos and videos.

According to the Android Authority, there is enough evidence that the company is working towards a social-focused sharing page. Additionally, they could also be working to improve the user experience by casting up more storage.

What is Social sharing page?

The overhauled sharing page will be similar to what Instagram likes page looks like. The report states that in the updated version, Google Photos could replace the current sharing icon, on the top right next to your profile photo, with a notification icon. This new upcoming icon will take you to a Sharing Activity page, which is just a social notification feed.

This page is expected to list the likes and comments for your albums while also notifying you when someone adds photos. An additional feature, as per the report, is that the page could also alert you when someone adds you to a group.

But then what happens to the already existing Sharing page? The report adds that this page will most likely move somewhere on the upcoming Sharing Activity page. The user can access the Sharing links from the top-right corner of the new page, as per assumptions.

As of now, the Sharing link page is primarily focused on creating and sharing new albums to a designated user. It also let the user view existing albums and links that were shared earlier.

More storage in Google Photos

Another update for Google Photos is by introducing a type of new meter that will help you claw back more storage. This meter supposedly will appear when you click on a category, say screenshots in the Review and Delete section of the manage store page. This meter will indicate how much storage the user can free up by taking all the suggested actions on the page.

While this new meter is a welcoming feature and will definitely help users, the overhauled sharing page would be a major change to Google Photos. This feature suggests the seriousness of Google in bringing its Google Photos app into the race of social media.

Google Photos for now is only a service which provides a backup for photos and videos.
